ChatGPT and its Ilk are Making it Easier for Remote Workers to Manage Multiple Jobs
The pandemic has normalized remote work for many organizations which has opened up many opportunities for individuals to work for multiple employers simultaneously. In a recent survey done by Monster, 37% of respondents admitted to having more than one full-time job which has only become easier with remote work.
With the advent of ChatGPT and other similar AI tools, managing multiple jobs for remote workers has become a lot easier. These AI tools make it possible for workers to not only do two jobs simultaneously but even three or four jobs, albeit with the caveat of increased burnout risk or getting caught.
According to a Vice report, there are already workers who have been using ChatGPT and similar tools to manage multiple jobs simultaneously. The report suggests that one such worker was able to manage two jobs and added a third that increased his compensation from $500,000 to $800,000. Other workers were even able to manage four jobs simultaneously.
It is unclear how many workers are using AI tools to manage multiple jobs, but it is evident that such tools can dramatically reduce the time needed to complete tasks. In a recent test, a management professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania used ChatGPT, GPT-4, MidJourney, and other generative AI tools to complete a business project, and the results were better than anticipated.
Remote workers’ managers, usually only care about getting a task done by a certain time and do not closely monitor activities. This means that remote workers can use AI tools to manage multiple jobs without being detected as long as they meet their deadlines.
As AI capabilities continue to develop, it is likely that more opportunities for remote workers to manage multiple jobs will arise. Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya said that it is not clear how to start a company anymore given the rapidly expanding AI capabilities like Auto-GPT that can act autonomously and self-prompt to achieve a given task.
In conclusion, ChatGPT and other similar AI tools have made it easier for remote workers to manage multiple jobs. While the trend may have negative implications such as increased burnout, it is important for organizations to be aware of the trend and ensure their employees are not overworked.
