The Pros and Cons of Using AI Technology in Education

'Rewrite the assignment': When a student used ChatGPT and got caught

In November last year, ChatGPT was launched, which quickly gained attention due to its articulate and detailed responses. However, a recent incident highlights that using the AI tool can backfire if not used correctly.

A student was asked to write an essay on William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". Thinking they could use ChatGPT to complete the assignment, the student made a critical mistake. Instead of removing the AI-generated statement that read, "I’m sorry, but as an AI language model, I am not able to complete this assignment. However, I can provide you with some guidance on how to approach this essay," the student left it in and was caught by the teacher.

This incident has sparked a debate among users on whether AI technology should be used in education. Some believe that AI will only get better over time, and teachers won’t be able to tell the difference between AI-generated work and human work. As a result, users suggest that schools may need to do away with essays entirely or revert back to traditional pen-and-paper assessments.

However, others argue that the incident occurred because of a poorly designed prompt. A well-crafted prompt should yield results that are indistinguishable from human work to the untrained eye.

In conclusion, while AI tools like ChatGPT have the potential to assist students in completing assignments, it is important to use them correctly and to take the necessary precautions to avoid academic misconduct.
