Discussion Session: ChatGPT and AI's Place in Higher Education
The impact of ChatGPT on the technology scene has caused a great deal of upheaval within the field of higher education. It has led to questions regarding plagiarism, the pros and cons of integrating AI into pedagogy, and ownership of intellectual property. To address these issues, the ESR Library Innovation Hub and Makerspace are hosting a discussion session on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 3pm to 4:30pm at Room 221, 1700 E. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251.
This session will focus on obtaining the student perspective on AI in education. Students will be invited to share their experiences on how AI has been helpful or harmful to their academic experience. The discussion will delve into the benefits and challenges of incorporating AI in pedagogy.
Is AI a Friend or Foe in Education?
There is much debate on whether AI will have a positive or negative impact on education. While AI has the potential to enhance the learning experience, some critics argue that it will never replace the human touch that is so vital to the learning process.
Incorporating AI into education requires a clear understanding of the associated risks and benefits. One potential risk is that AI may make learning too impersonal and standardized. However, AI can also be used to personalize learning, addressing the needs of each student individually.
Intellectual Property Rights
Another issue that arises from the integration of AI in education is ownership of intellectual property. This is a complex issue that requires careful consideration, especially as AI continues to become more advanced and capable of producing original work.
Given the potential of AI to transform education in both positive and negative ways, it is important to have open discussions on its role in higher education. We welcome all interested parties to join us at this discussion session to share their thoughts on the matter.
