Google launches new Gemini Code Assist Is better than others code ...
Google recently released its AI coding tool, Gemini Code Assist, for free on February 25, 2025. This tool was previously only available through paid business plans. However, Google has now made it accessible to all users, offering up to 180,000 code completions per month.
This release marks a significant improvement over its main competitor, GitHub Copilot, which only offers 2,000 code completions. According to Ryan J. Salva, senior director of product management at Google, this new tool enables users to learn, create code snippets, debug, and modify applications more conveniently.
Empowering Individual Developers
With the new free version of Gemini Code Assist integrated into Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDE, individual developers now have access to advanced code completion, generation, and chat tools previously only available to enterprises. This eliminates the need to switch between multiple windows for assistance or copy and paste information from various sources.
Gemini Code Assist supports up to 128,000 input tokens in chat, providing developers with a broad context window. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of local codebases and the ability to work with large files effectively.

Enhanced Features
The chat feature in Gemini Code Assist enables developers to focus on creative aspects of development while delegating repetitive tasks to the tool, such as creating automated tests from requirements or comments.
Google's latest LLM, Gemini 2.0, powers Gemini Code Assist for individuals, offering support for all programming languages in the public domain. This puts Gemini Code Assist on par with GitHub Copilot in terms of LLM power.
Getting Started with Gemini Code Assist
Signing up for Gemini Code Assist is simple and requires only a personal Gmail account, with no credit card needed. The tool can be easily installed in Visual Studio Code, GitHub, or JetBrains IDEs. User feedback from this public preview will be used to further develop Gemini Code Assist.

While the free individual tier of Gemini Code Assist is comprehensive, some advanced features present in the Standard and Enterprise versions are not included. Users requiring customization options using private code data sources or integration with Google Cloud services will need to opt for the paid tiers.
Gemini Code Assist aims to help developers complete projects more efficiently and expertly, whether they are students working on interactive data visualizations or freelance developers testing new concepts for applications or games.
Developers can now leverage Gemini Code Assist to enhance their coding experience and improve productivity without the limitations faced by other AI providers. This new tool from Google is set to revolutionize the way developers approach coding tasks and streamline their workflow.
