Meta unveils 2 new multi-modal AI models: Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick
On Saturday, Meta introduced its next generation of language models — Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick. These two models are available on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct, and via Meta.ai. They are the first two open-source AI models within the Llama 4 family, with two more models expected to be launched at a later date.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, described Llama 4 as a milestone for Meta AI and for open source. He mentioned in an Instagram Reel that for the first time, the best small, mid-sized, and potentially frontier models will be open source.
Llama 4 Scout is a small multimodal model with a 10 million token context length that can operate on a single GPU like the Nvidia H100. It features a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture with 17 billion parameters across 16 experts. Llama 4 Scout is considered the highest-performing model in its class, outperforming GPT-4o and Gemini Flash 2 in all benchmarks. It is also noted to be smaller and more efficient compared to DeepSeek V3, another 17-billion-parameter model using 128 experts. Llama 4 Scout is capable of running on a single host for easy inferencing.
Today marks the beginning of a new era of natively multimodal AI innovation. The introduction of the first Llama 4 models, Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick, represents the most advanced models in their class for multimodality.
Llama 4 Scout Tweet:
Llama 4 Reasoning is expected to be launched next month, while Llama 4 Behemoth, a large language model with two trillion parameters, is currently in training and is anticipated to be the largest model yet.
Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick are now available for free download via Meta and Hugging Face. However, there may be certain licensing restrictions that limit access to these open-source models.
