ChatGPT's Ghibli image demand strains OpenAI's resources; Sam Altman shares updates
The recent surge in popularity of ChatGPT's Studio Ghibli-inspired images has presented significant challenges for the company, with over 1 million users joining within just five days of the launch of GPT-4o, the model powering these images. The CEO announced that the company reached the milestone of 1 million users within an hour on March 31.

This rapid influx of traffic has put a strain on the company's resources, leading to delays in new model releases, slower response times, and occasional service outages. Sam Altman, in updates shared via X (formerly Twitter), reassured users that the team is actively addressing the current situation. However, he cautioned users to anticipate delays in new releases from OpenAI.
Addressing Ongoing Challenges
Altman emphasized the importance of understanding that certain features may not function as intended, and service may be slower during this period of capacity challenges. He acknowledged these issues as a natural part of the company's efforts to improve their systems.
Regarding GPU requirements, Altman mentioned the company's continuous efforts to scale their AI infrastructure. In a subsequent post, he expressed the team's commitment to swiftly resolve the situation and called on those with available GPU capacity in increments of 1,00,000 to get in touch immediately.

Initially, there were hints of a GPT-5 launch in February, but Altman's recent statements indicate a possible postponement of this release. The ongoing GPU scarcity raises questions about whether this will pose a long-term challenge for the company, which now boasts 500 million weekly users of ChatGPT.
Financial Backing and Future Plans
Despite concerns over GPU shortages, OpenAI announced an additional $40 billion funding boost this week. This financial injection comes at a time when the San Francisco lab has already invested billions in GPUs, known for their high energy consumption.
