SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is currently in the US to engage in meetings with key leaders of prominent tech companies, such as OpenAI and Microsoft, to explore potential collaborations in the realm of artificial intelligence.

During his visit, Chey shared images on social media of himself exchanging greetings with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, during separate encounters in the US.

In a recent social media post, Chey expressed his enthusiasm about his interactions with IT leaders, highlighting the warm reception he received and the invigorating discussions that took place. He emphasized the unprecedented opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving field of AI and urged others to seize the moment.

According to the SK Supex Council, the primary decision-making body of the SK Group, Chairman Chey aims to establish a "trilateral partnership" in the AI sector through his dialogues with these tech giants.

At OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco, Chey and Altman explored potential avenues for collaboration and exchanged insights on the future trajectory of AI technology. Similarly, at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, Chey and Nadella reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering their existing partnership in semiconductor technology, data centers, and AI. Both leaders pledged to convene regularly to foster further collaboration.

Accompanying Chey on his US visit are SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang and SK hynix President Kim Joo-sun, who oversees AI Infra, along with other senior executives from the conglomerate.

Strategic Meeting Agenda

The SK Supex Council is scheduled to conduct a two-day executive meeting, with around 30 top executives from the group's major affiliates participating. The agenda includes discussions on strategies for achieving "qualitative growth" within the organization and identifying new drivers for expansion.

Key topics up for deliberation encompass optimizing business operations for increased efficiency and profitability, as well as strategically investing in future growth sectors, notably AI, battery technology, and biotechnology.

An SK official mentioned, "We anticipate a substantial increase in investments related to AI, including SK hynix's High Bandwidth Memory, to align with the surging demand for AI applications in the near future."

SK Group, positioned as the country's second-largest conglomerate based on asset value, has been actively streamlining its extensive network of 213 affiliates, a move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness in the industry.
