The Benefits and Dangers of Using Chatbots in HR

HR's ChatGPT Obsession Comes With Faulty Sources, Bias, and...

The use of ChatGPT in HR departments is on the rise, and while the sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, the blind trust in these tools can be harmful. According to Capterra's HR Chatbot Survey of 300 HR professionals, only 29% of HR leaders check the sources for ChatGPT-generated content, which can lead to critical errors.

Although the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in HR can save time and resources, HR professionals need to be vigilant and careful. These tools can spread inaccurate or biased information, which can harm an employer's brand and reputation. Additionally, chatbot content lacks a company's unique personality, which is a crucial component to have if you want to entice job seekers or build your company's culture. Therefore, it is best to restrict ChatGPT usage to evergreen content, such as employee engagement surveys or performance review templates.

While the benefits of using ChatGPT are well-documented, the risks associated with unverified content cannot be ignored. Capterra's survey found that 73% of HR professionals have used ChatGPT, with 97% agreeing that it saves time, allowing them to focus on other priorities. The same survey found that 91% of HR professionals who have used bots rated the quality of responses as "good" or "excellent."

However, a significant proportion of HR professionals are not cautious about fact-checking ChatGPT content. The survey revealed that only 29% of HR leaders who used AI chatbots always ask for the source, while 65% only check sometimes, and 6% rarely verify the source.

Testing revealed that ChatGPT can provide incorrect statistics on DEI, which could potentially lead to disastrous HR content. Furthermore, when prompted with specific company roles, ChatGPT provided sexist content and assumed genders.

Professionals must be rigorous about fact-checking chatbot-generated content to avoid errors that could tarnish the reputation of their brand, alienate current and future employees. While generative AI chatbots are here to stay, they are not advanced enough to automate HR work entirely. The full report by Capterra offers six tips for using chatbots to generate HR content to ensure accuracy and minimize risk.
