Stable Diffusion Creators launch ChatGPT Rival: StableLM
Stable Diffusion creators have launched StableLM, a new AI chatbot that is now available for testing. The AI chatbot market is becoming increasingly crowded with more competitors appearing, like Google Bard and various Chinese firms with their ChatGPT rivals. The Stability AI team that created Stable Diffusion is already well known for its AI image generator, and it is now introducing the StableLM AI Chatbot.
Although StableLM's model is not as comprehensive as ChatGPT with just 3-7 billion parameters compared to OpenAI's 175 billion model, Stability AI is aiming to show how small and efficient models can deliver high performance with appropriate training. This could be the go-to model for lower-end machines and systems, thus democratizing AI.
StableLM is an open-source model that aims to democratize chatbot-style AI. Even developers who could not afford access to ChatGPT API or its plugins can use StableLM to add AI to their creations. This looks like a vital step for bedroom coders and indie developers, even if they use it for a proof-of-concept or trial run before switching to ChatGPT. This open-source structure and planned model improvements could make StableLM a true ChatGPT killer.
StableLM currently lacks the reinforcement-based learning of ChatGPT, but as a pre-trained model, improvements will have to be made directly to it by humans. However, Stable Diffusion already has plans to introduce larger model offerings, including a 175 billion parameter model in the future to match ChatGPT itself.
Developers can try an alpha version of StableLM on Hugging Face, but it is still an early demo and may have performance issues and mixed results. The videogame modding scene shows that some of the best ideas come from outside of traditional avenues, and hopefully, StableLM will find a similar sense of community.
