Say Hello to Bavarder - the New ChatGPT App for Linux

New ChatGPT App for Linux Makes AI More Accessible - OMG! Ubuntu

If you are a Linux desktop user and want to talk to ChatGPT without opening a web browser, Bavarder is here to help. Bavarder is a newly developed app for Linux written in Python and GTK4/libadwaita. Its primary purpose is to provide quick and easy access to AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

How It Works

The user interface of the Bavarder app is incredibly straightforward. You type in your query in the top box, hit the blue send button, and wait for the generated reply to appear in the bottom. You can edit/amend your message and repeat the process.

Bavarder uses BAI Chat, a GPT-3.5/ChatGPT API based chatbot that is free to use during our testing. Moreover, an update to the app adds support for alternative backends, such as ChatGPT 4 and Hugging Chat, albeit with the need for API keys in some.

Limitations and Caveats

Although Bavarder is an impressive app, there are some caveats to bear in mind. The app does not provide an option to regenerate a response. However, you can send the same question again to get potentially different answers. There’s no conversation view, which makes it challenging to track a conversation or follow-up on answers.

As with any AI, there are limitations to the accuracy and reliability of the responses given by the chatbot. It is effortless to manipulate these models into illogical loops, making the responses unreliable.

Final Words

Bavarder is an excellent-looking app with a clear purpose, free for all Linux users who want to talk to ChatGPT and similar chatbots. If you are a fan of ChatGPT and the like, Bavarder is definitely worth checking out.

You can download Bavarder on Flathub and enjoy easy access to AI chatbots on your Linux desktop.
