Samsung Prohibits the Use of ChatGPT by its Employees
Samsung, the global technology giant, has announced that its employees are no longer allowed to use ChatGPT on company systems. The decision was made due to concerns that employees were feeding ChatGPT sensitive corporate information, which could be disclosed to others. In a memo sent to its employees, Samsung stated that data sent to AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing are stored on external servers, making it hard to retrieve or delete. Failure to comply with the security guidelines may result in a breach or compromise of company information and could lead to disciplinary action, including termination of employment.
Similar to other technology companies, Samsung is protective of its intellectual property, including hardware and software designs, and product release roadmaps. While it is unclear if Samsung-specific information could be retrieved from the Large Language Models used by generative AI tools, competitors could exploit even abstracted information.
Samsung is one of the many companies on the growing list, including Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Verizon, that have banned or limited its employees from using third-party AI tools on company computers and mobile devices. However, Samsung is proceeding with its plans for integrating artificial intelligence into its semiconductor products.
OpenAI's ChatGPT gained popularity after the launch of GPT-4 in March. A group of prominent technologists, researchers, and influencers, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Andrew Yang, called on OpenAI to pause the training of the next version of ChatGPT. Several countries also voiced concerns over user privacy, prompting OpenAI to update ChatGPT to include the option to opt-out of having the chatbot store chat history or allow the use of user data in training the program.
Although Samsung is temporarily restricting the use of generative AI, it is reviewing security measures to enable safe AI use for productivity. However, to learn about Samsung's product roadmap, it is better to visit the official Samsung website. Samsung has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
