Samsung Bans Use of ChatGPT, Google Bard, Bing Chatbot and Other AI Generative Tools
Samsung has recently announced a ban on the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing AI chatbot. The ban follows concerns that sensitive data used by these platforms could end up in the wrong hands, as it is stored on external servers.
The ban was implemented after Samsung engineers accidentally leaked internal source code by uploading it onto ChatGPT. As a result, the company is reviewing its security measures to create a secure environment for the safe usage of generative AI to enhance employee productivity and efficiency.
The ban applies to Samsung-owned computers, tablets, and phones and is intended to prevent sensitive information from being shared outside the organization.
Why the Ban?
The memo sent to Samsung employees cited concerns about the security risks presented by generative AI platforms, despite growing interest and focus on their usefulness and efficiency. Internal and external interest in generative AI has been on the rise, leading to concerns that the sensitive data used by these platforms could be accessed by unauthorized parties.
Samsung Engineers and ChatGPT Data Leak
ChatGPT was being used by Samsung engineers at the semiconductor division to help fix problems with source code. However, in a span of one month, three incidents were reported where employees mistakenly entered top-secret data, such as source code for a new program and internal meeting notes relating to their hardware.
Samsung Semiconductor is now working on its own AI to avoid making such mistakes, but the company has limited it to processing prompts under 1024 bytes in size.
The Dangers of AI Generative Tools
Concerns over the potential dangers of AI tools have been growing, with some experts warning about the risks that these tools could pose in the future. Geoffrey Hinton, also known as the "Godfather of AI," recently left Google to speak freely about the dangers of AI, without considering how his statements could impact Google.
As organizations continue to adopt AI and machine learning technologies, it is essential that they prioritize security and ensure that sensitive data is kept safe. Samsung's ban on the use of AI generative tools is a step in the right direction towards achieving this goal.
