Meta AI tools come to UK for first time | Your Local Guardian
Meta’s generative AI tools, including a chatbot which can be used across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, are now rolling out in the UK, as confirmed by the tech giant. The Meta AI was initially launched last year, providing users the ability to ask questions using text, voice, or images to receive more information, creative assistance, or inspiration, and edit or generate new images.
The tools have already been introduced in the US but had not yet reached the UK or EU due to concerns raised by regulators over Meta’s plans to train the AI models using public posts from users of its platforms. However, last month, Meta confirmed that it had reached an agreement with the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), to start training its models on posts from UK users who do not object to their data being used.

Expansion in the UK and Beyond
According to a blog post by Meta, the technology will also be integrated into its Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses. The tools will be initially available within Facebook and Instagram in the UK. The company is planning to expand the technology to a number of other countries in Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia in the coming months.
The company aims to introduce Meta AI tools in 21 new locales worldwide, starting with the UK and expanding to Brazil, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. The technology will assist users in getting answers to their questions, brainstorming content, and bringing creative ideas to life.

Accessibility and Usage
Meta AI is integrated into popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Users can access the tools by tapping on the Meta AI icon or typing ‘@Meta AI’ in a group chat. The technology can also be utilized on the web at meta.ai.
Meta's goal is to establish itself as a leading AI chatbot firm by providing its tools to users free of charge. With a gradual rollout, Meta AI is expected to be available in 43 countries and a dozen languages, making it one of the most used AI assistants globally by the end of the year, with almost 500 million active users monthly.
