Effects of ChatGPT and argument map(AM)-supported online Argumentation
Online argumentation offers students the opportunity to reflect and construct arguments, but often lacks clear structure and timely guidance. This deficiency can hinder students' ability to effectively support or counter arguments and develop critical thinking skills. A recent study explored the impact of integrating ChatGPT and argument maps (AMs) into online argumentation processes.
Study Design
The study involved 64 sophomores divided into control and experimental groups. Each group was further split into teams representing both pro and con sides of arguments. The control group engaged in textual argumentation while the experimental group utilized argument maps for their discussions, with the option to seek assistance from ChatGPT 3.5 when needed.
Evaluation Methods
Both questionnaires and content analysis were employed to assess students' critical thinking skills and perceptions throughout the process. The results highlighted the benefits of incorporating ChatGPT and AMs in online argumentation. Students demonstrated enhanced critical thinking skills and engaged in more analytical activities such as rebuttals, evaluations, and argument construction.
Findings and Implications
The study revealed that AMs effectively visualized argument structures, although with limitations in aiding information gathering. ChatGPT provided detailed information and encouraged a positive attitude towards argumentation but raised concerns about the accuracy of the information provided. The findings suggest the importance of integrating teacher guidance into online argumentation processes to enhance students' critical thinking skills, promoting information literacy to maximize the benefits of tools like ChatGPT.
This study contributes valuable insights into the use of ChatGPT and argument maps in online argumentation, emphasizing the significance of combining technology with educational support to facilitate learning and critical thinking development.
