ChatGPT gets a big update, can now set reminders and perform tasks
StoryOpenAI is introducing a new feature to ChatGPT that enhances its capabilities, making it more akin to a personal assistant. This latest addition, known as Tasks and currently in the beta phase, enables users to establish reminders and schedule future actions. Beginning today, this feature is accessible to subscribers of the Plus, Team, or Pro plans.
Enhanced Functionality
The concept behind Tasks is straightforward yet powerful. In addition to providing immediate assistance and answering queries, ChatGPT can now handle tasks scheduled for a later time. For instance, users can request a daily weather update at 7 AM, receive reminders about important deadlines, or even enjoy a lighthearted joke before bedtime to lift their spirits. Tasks can be set as one-time occurrences or recurring events for regularly needed actions.
How to Use Tasks
To utilize this feature, users must select the option with scheduled tasks in the ChatGPT menu. Subsequently, they can input the desired task and its scheduled time. ChatGPT also offers task suggestions based on the conversation, requiring confirmation from the user. While convenient, some individuals may find these recommendations unnecessary or intrusive, especially if they prefer minimal AI intervention.
Task Management
Users can monitor their tasks in two ways: directly within chat threads or through a new dedicated Tasks section, accessible through the profile menu on the web version of ChatGPT. Task modification or cancellation is straightforward in case plans change. Upon completion of a task, users receive notifications on the web, desktop, or mobile platforms. There is a limit of 10 active tasks at any given time to maintain organization.
Future Developments
This update represents a notable evolution for ChatGPT, transitioning from purely conversational interactions and real-time assistance to proactive task management. However, questions linger regarding the feature's reliability in delivering timely reminders and updates. OpenAI is expected to address any issues during the beta phase before a broader rollout.
Looking ahead, OpenAI appears to have ambitious initiatives on the horizon. Reports suggest the development of Operator, a tool enabling ChatGPT to autonomously control users' computers. Another project, codenamed Caterpillar, aims to enhance ChatGPT's capabilities in information retrieval, problem-solving, and document management.
Availability and Pricing
Tasks are currently available for testing by paid subscribers. While this feature is beneficial, its beta status suggests caution when relying on it for critical tasks. OpenAI has not confirmed if Tasks will be accessible to free users in the future. Presently, it is exclusive to paid plans, ranging from $20 to $200 per month.
