Rare Bees vs. Nuclear Data Center: Inside Meta's Unexpected Challenge

Meta's ambition to become a leader in nuclear energy for its AI data centers has run into an unexpected obstacle: a rare species of bee. This discovery, as reported by the Financial Times, occurred at the site where Meta planned to build a nuclear-powered facility.

The presence of this unique bee population reportedly complicated negotiations with an existing nuclear power plant, according to sources familiar with the situation. Even without the bee issue, the project would have faced significant environmental and regulatory hurdles, these individuals said.

Zuckerberg's Vision

Zuckerberg reportedly informed employees that Meta's proposed nuclear data center would have been the first Big Tech company to use this technology, and it would have had the largest nuclear power plant among its peers if the deal had been successful.

Meanwhile, other tech giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are actively pursuing their own nuclear power deals amid growing concerns about AI's significant energy consumption. Amazon recently signed several agreements to support the development of nuclear energy projects, including the construction of several small modular reactors (SMRs).
