OpenAI and Meta Platforms exploring AI partnerships with Reliance in India
OpenAI and Meta Platforms have engaged in discussions with India’s Reliance Industries to explore potential partnerships to enhance their artificial intelligence presence in the country, according to a report by news website The Information.
OpenAI's Discussions
Reports have revealed that OpenAI has discussed with employees a possibility to reduce the ChatGPT subscription price, way lesser than $20 a month. However, the fact that this discussion was made with Reliance has not been clarified yet.
Reliance's Response
In response to this discussion with OpenAI, Reliance has showed its intention to sell their model to its enterprise customers using an application programming interface (API). According to The Information, under the leadership of Mukesh Ambani, Reliance discussed hosting and running OpenAI models locally to ensure privacy of the Indian data.
Meta's Involvement
Meta, which previously invested billions in Jio, also discussed working with Reliance on new artificial intelligence businesses, but its standalone Meta AI web app and other chatbots currently attract very few Indian visitors relative to OpenAI’s site, according to Similarweb.
Furthermore, the discussion progressed as Reliance shared the plan to build three-gigawatt data centres in Jamnagar to run the Meta and OpenAI models. Thus, Gujarat may soon be home to the be largest data centre in the world.
Apart from being one of the largest conglomerates in India, Reliance Industries has an extremely strong socio-political position. As the the AI-revolution unfurls, India will soon be looking at multiple data centres like these. With the onus lying on Reliance Jio to bring models like Meta and Open AI to India, it becomes a crucial step in deciding the future of AI in India.
