OpenAI's chatbot service ChatGPT faces GDPR probe in Germany

Germany Launches Probe into ChatGPT Over Data Protection

Germany has launched an investigation into ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot service. The country's regulators are looking into whether the service adheres to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). ChatGPT's parent company, California-based OpenAI, has been given a questionnaire by the regulators, which it is expected to respond to by June 11th. The regulators are asking whether a data protection impact assessment has been carried out and whether data protection risks are under control.

OpenAI has been criticized for not informing its users sufficiently about GDPR provisions, and there are also concerns about how the chatbot is accessing and processing data relating to minors, given that its service is not age-restricted. Other countries, including Italy, have already taken steps to ban the chatbot, with its mass collection and storage of user data being a key concern.

This move by Germany is part of growing global concern about the regulation of AI. European lawmakers have called for the US and the European Commission to work together on AI regulations, and there are signs that other countries, such as China, are also considering introducing national policies.
