OpenAI co-founder John Schulman leaves ChatGPT maker for rival Anthropic

John Schulman, one of the co-founders of artificial intelligence company OpenAI, has announced his departure from the ChatGPT maker to join rival company Anthropic. Schulman shared this news on social media platform X, expressing his decision to focus more on AI alignment and return to hands-on technical work in his career.

Changes at OpenAI

Following Schulman's departure, OpenAI's President and co-founder Greg Brockman revealed that he will be taking a sabbatical until the end of the year. The company also saw the exit of product manager Peter Deng, who joined OpenAI last year. These changes come amidst significant personnel shifts at OpenAI, including the reassignment of AI safety leader Aleksander Madry to a new role in July.

Departures of Key Figures

Earlier this year, OpenAI witnessed the departure of another co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, in May. Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of the AI firm, left OpenAI in February to pursue an AI-integrated education platform in July. Additionally, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left three years later, recently revived a lawsuit against the company and CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of prioritizing profits over the public good.
