AI developers should counter misinformation and protect fact-based news
A global group of broadcasters and publishers is urging artificial intelligence developers to prioritize serving the public by combatting misinformation and upholding the integrity of fact-based news.

The European Broadcasting Union, based in Geneva, which includes public broadcasters and hosts the popular Eurovision Song Contest, is collaborating with the World Association of News Publishers and other partners to engage with AI technology companies.
News Integrity in the Age of AI Initiative
At the World News Media Congress in Krakow, Poland, the initiative "News Integrity in the Age of AI" was introduced, outlining five core steps for ensuring the responsible use of AI in news content.
The initiative advocates for the authorization of content originators when utilizing news content in generative AI models, as well as promoting transparency in attribution and accuracy. It emphasizes the importance of clearly identifying the original news source in AI-generated materials.
Ladina Heimgartner, president of the publishers association and CEO of Ringier Media in Switzerland, emphasized the need for organizations to prioritize truth and facts in shaping a democratic society.
Collaboration with Tech Companies
Various media affiliates, including Latin American broadcasters association AIL, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, and the North American Broadcasters Association, have joined forces with EBU and WAN-IFRA to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the media industry.
Since the emergence of AI technology, media organizations have been exploring the best approaches to leverage AI while also navigating potential conflicts with AI developers.
Despite these challenges, many media outlets have entered into partnerships with AI companies to explore new opportunities for delivering news content through innovative technologies.

The Future of AI in Media
Leading tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have highlighted the importance of incorporating AI models within the framework of copyright law. They argue that the "fair use" doctrine allows for the ethical and legal use of copyrighted materials for educational and transformative purposes.
As the media landscape continues to evolve, collaboration between media organizations and AI developers will be crucial in shaping the future of news delivery and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of information.
