Musk's Security Concerns: Apple's OpenAI Integration

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed strong opposition to the partnership between Apple and OpenAI

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has recently voiced his strong disapproval of the collaboration between Apple and OpenAI. Musk explicitly stated that he would prohibit the use of Apple devices, such as iPhones and iPads, that are integrated with ChatGPT technology, developed in-house by Apple.

In a post on his X (X, former Twitter) account, Musk declared, "If Apple incorporates open AI at the operating system (OS) level, Apple devices will be banned from my companies." He further emphasized, "This is an unacceptable security breach." Musk went on to explain that visitors to his companies would be required to leave their Apple devices at the entrance, where they would be stored in Faraday cages to prevent external electrostatic interference.

Concerns About Data Security and Privacy

Musk expressed skepticism about Apple's ability to guarantee the security and privacy of user data when utilizing OpenAI technology. He stated, "It is illogical to assume that Apple can ensure that open AI protects your security and privacy while lacking the intelligence to develop its own AI. Once Apple shares your data with OpenAI, the consequences are unpredictable. They can betray and exploit your information." Musk also shared an image titled "How Apple Intelligence Works," illustrating OpenAI extracting user data through Apple's iPhones.

Apple's Integration of AI in iOS 18

During the World Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024, Apple disclosed its plans to integrate advanced AI capabilities into the iPhone's operating system, iOS 18. The technology, referred to as 'Apple Intelligence,' includes the incorporation of ChatGPT into Apple's virtual assistant, 'Siri,' through a collaboration with OpenAI.

According to reports from IT media outlet 9to5Mac, Musk is involved in overseeing "xAI," a rival AI service to OpenAI. Despite co-founding OpenAI in 2015, Musk resigned from the board in 2018 and divested all his shares. Earlier this year, Musk initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, demanding the discontinuation of their commercial operations and the release of AI technology as open-source.
