Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has decided to halt its AI assistant following a ruling by Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). The ANPD's decision mandates Meta to revise its privacy policy and cease using personal data from Brazilian citizens for training its AI models.
This development poses a setback for Meta’s plans to expand its AI services in Brazil, a significant market with over 200 million people.
Meta Addressing ANPD's Concerns
In response to the ANPD's ruling, Meta spokesperson stated, “We decided to suspend generative AI features that were previously live in Brazil while we engage with the ANPD to address their questions around generative AI.” This decision came after Meta had introduced an AI-based ad targeting feature for businesses in Brazil in June 2024.
Shortly after the launch, the ANPD intervened and mandated Meta to immediately stop the enforcement of its revised privacy policy related to using personal data for training generative AI systems.
ANPD's Preventative Actions
The ANPD's intervention was based on the perceived risks of harm to fundamental rights due to the use of personal data for AI training. The authority also imposed a hefty daily fine on non-compliant companies.
This isn't the first time Meta has faced obstacles regarding AI training. In May, Meta had to pause AI training initiatives in Europe and the UK due to objections from the Irish Data Protection Commission.
