You can't escape Meta AI in WhatsApp even if you are based in one of the 41 European countries, with the feature now rolling out to more devices. For quite some time now, Meta has forced WhatsApp users to enable Meta AI. Security and privacy risks aside, the company is now rolling out this feature to 41 European countries after some delay.
On March 19, WhatsApp owner Meta announced that a variety of AI upgrades would be coming to users in Europe after the company paused the rollout last year. Since then, more users have started seeing the button to open Meta AI in WhatsApp.
Concerns and Reactions
Oh meta, you sweet ass bastards. Although some hope that this update could be the nail in the coffin for many, leading them to switch to Signal, the reality is different. In certain countries, like mine, people seem to have the tolerance to continue using WhatsApp despite concerns. Nevertheless, here are some things you can do:
- Avoid using WhatsApp altogether if possible.
- Explore alternative messaging apps like Signal.
While many may not care or may even be willing to use WhatsApp, there are individuals who are not pleased with the updates and are considering making the switch to Signal. Personally, I am also considering transitioning to Signal, especially if more of my contacts make the move.
Privacy Concerns
Many users find it hard to trust Meta, especially when it comes to utilizing their AI on WhatsApp. Some may choose to use it sparingly or not at all to avoid potential privacy risks. Concerns arise from the possibility of Meta combining AI data with other metadata collected from WhatsApp, despite any assurances in their policies.
If Meta AI has already made its way to your region, exercise caution. Avoid clicking on the AI icon and carefully consider the Terms & Conditions before accepting them.
Consider migrating your contacts to Signal for a potentially more secure messaging experience.
