ChatGPT arrived on the scene in 2022. A Vienna-based privacy campaign group, NOYB (“None of Your Business”), announced that it intends to file a complaint against ChatGPT in Austria. The group claims that ChatGPT's flagship AI tool produces inaccurate information that even OpenAI, the maker, cannot rectify.
NOYB expressed concerns about the accuracy of the data produced by ChatGPT, stating that the program continues to provide incorrect information without the ability for corrections. The group emphasized that under EU law, personal data must be accurate, highlighting the importance of transparency in data generation processes.
Concerns Raised by NOYB
NOYB pointed out that ChatGPT repeatedly provided incorrect information, such as inaccuracies in the date of birth of NOYB founder Max Schrems. Despite requests for correction or deletion of the data, OpenAI reportedly refused to comply, citing technical limitations.
NOYB has urged Austria's data protection authority to investigate OpenAI and potentially impose fines to ensure compliance with EU laws.
Legal Actions and Criticisms
ChatGPT garnered attention for its capabilities, including the rapid completion of dissertations, poems, and translations. However, the technology has faced criticism and legal challenges in various countries. Italy imposed a temporary block on the program, while France initiated an investigation following complaints.
In response to concerns about AI regulation, a European working group has been established, although NOYB remains cautious about the effectiveness of these efforts.
