Is Anthropic's Chatbot Claude the New ChatGPT Killer?

Anthropic Upgrades Chatbot to Compete with ChatGPT

Anthropic, the rival chatbot maker of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, announced that it has upgraded its own generative artificial intelligence. This upgrade includes a longer memory capacity, allowing its chatbot, Claude, to read and analyze much longer texts than before.

One of the limitations of generative AI is the amount of memory it can handle, or its "context window". It determines how much text an AI can handle before it begins to forget what was being discussed earlier, limiting the conversations that can be held. This context window is measured in tokens, rather than words.

Anthropic's Claude has been upgraded from 9,000 tokens to 100,000 tokens, equivalent to about 75,000 words in total. This means businesses can now submit hundreds of pages of materials for Claude to digest and analyze, and interactions with Claude can go on for hours or even days.

ChatGPT's context window is approximately 4,000 tokens (or about 3,000 words) and OpenAI's GPT-4 has a context window of 32,768 tokens (about 25,000 words). In comparison, Claude's greatly enhanced memory allows it to stand out and process information more efficiently.

To test Claude’s enhanced memory, the Anthropic team fed the entire text of "The Great Gatsby" into the chatbot. The AI read the entire novel and spotted the difference in under 22 seconds proving its capabilities. The use of extremely large context windows means that enormous documents can be processed all at once without losing sight of any data, making it easier to digest, summarize and explain dense material such as financial statements, research papers, legal filings, and annual reports.

Anthropic’s team further stated that developers could benefit from this by using Claude to read hundreds of pages of documentation and have the chatbot answer questions about them. This upgrade is currently open to Anthropic’s business partners through Claude’s application programming interface, and will eventually be available to the public.
