OpenAI, Meta in Talks with Reliance for AI Expansion in India: Report

OpenAI and Meta Platforms have initiated discussions with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for potential AI partnerships in India, as reported by The Information. This move has also been covered by Bloomberg and Reuters.
Reports suggest that Reliance is collaborating with Nvidia to democratise AI in India, following its success with high-speed data initiatives.
Engagement with OpenAI
OpenAI executives have been actively engaging with counterparts at Reliance in recent months to explore potential product and sales partnerships. According to sources familiar with the discussions, a key possibility involves Reliance Jio distributing OpenAI's ChatGPT to enhance its presence in the country.
Furthermore, there have been talks about reducing ChatGPT's subscription fee significantly, although it is uncertain if this proposal has been discussed with Reliance.
Reliance is also considering selling OpenAI's AI models to enterprise clients through an API and hosting these models locally to ensure data residency within India.
AI Model Distribution and Data Center Development
Reliance is in the process of deploying AI models from both OpenAI and Meta in its upcoming 3GW data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

This data center, touted to be the world's largest, is a significant part of Reliance's AI infrastructure plans in the country.
It was recently reported that Reliance Jio has introduced a new AI Cloud storage offering, providing 50GB of storage despite initial promises of up to 100GB. This offering is available on select prepaid and postpaid plans.
