Inside Google Gemini: How Much Data Does It Really Collect?

Google Gemini collects more data than other AI chatbots

A recent report from virtual private network provider SurfShark revealed that Google Gemini collects a substantial amount of data compared to other AI chatbots in the market. According to the report, Google Gemini gathers 22 out of 35 possible data types, including precise location data, which is only collected by a few other chatbots like Copilot and Perplexity.

Additionally, Google Gemini is known to collect a significant volume of data across various categories such as contact information, user content, search history, and browsing history, raising privacy concerns among users.

Concerns About Data Collection

The report also highlighted concerns regarding data collection by the Chinese AI bot, DeepSeek, which ranks 5th among the most popular AI chatbots based on data collection practices. Despite being less intrusive than Google Gemini, DeepSeek still collects 11 unique types of data, including usage data and user content.

SurfShark, the VPN company behind the research, warned users to be cautious about their data security when interacting with AI chatbots. A breach in DeepSeek's security infrastructure previously led to the leakage of over 1 million records, including API keys and chat history.

The study conducted by SurfShark involved analyzing the privacy policies of popular AI chatbots available on the Apple App Store, shedding light on the data collection practices of these virtual assistants.

Security Recommendations

Tomas Stamulis, Chief Security Officer at SurfShark, advised users to disable chat history functionalities and review privacy settings on AI chatbots. He also emphasized the importance of being selective about sharing sensitive information with these platforms.
