ChatGPT Delivers Credible Answers to Colonoscopy Queries
According to a recent study, ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, can provide patients with scientifically adequate and understandable responses to common questions about colonoscopy. The study's authors believe that with specialized domain training, clinically relevant communication with colonoscopy patients can be improved. The study was published on May 5th, 2023, in the journal Gastroenterology.
For the study, the authors evaluated ChatGPT's responses to eight frequently asked questions about colonoscopy. ChatGPT generated believable medical information in response to these questions, according to the authors. They used plagiarism detection software to compare ChatGPT responses to website responses, discovering that text similarity was very low between the two for all questions.
Four gastroenterologists evaluated 36 pairs of common colonoscopy questions and answers on a seven-point Likert scale according to ease of understanding, scientific adequacy, and satisfaction with the answer. They found that the gastroenterologists gave high marks to ChatGPT-generated answers and non-AI-generated answers, with some AI scores even surpassing those of non-AI-generated answers.
The researchers believe that AI-generated medical information, when appropriately overseen by medical professionals, accredited, and monitored, might aid in improving care efficiency and freeing up healthcare professionals for more complex patient communications. However, several challenges remain in constructing AI-generated answers, including the lack of clinical evidence and the potential for a higher reading level than patient-friendly responses.
