'Responsible AI': ChatGPT bot gets ethical nod from G7 digital ministers

The digital ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries have encouraged the adoption of "risk-based" regulation on artificial intelligence (AI) and ethical use of AI, including the ChatGPT AI bot developed by US company OpenAI. In a joint declaration after their meeting in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, the ministers recognized the need to take stock of the opportunities and challenges of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT and to continue promoting safety and trust.

The G7 ministers intend to continue fostering safety and trust by encouraging discussion on issues such as risk assessment and stakeholder involvement in developing global standards for AI governance frameworks. They also acknowledged the need to promote data-free flow with trust, an idea put forward by Japan to unlock the full potential of global economic growth without compromising privacy and security.

The G7 agreed on distinct action plans for internet governance, upgrading robust digital infrastructure, and promoting "responsible AI" innovation and data free flow with confidence. They also expressed their commitment to defending democratic institutions and principles against threats from outside.
