ChatGPT in early childhood STEM education: Can it be an...
The study aims to assess the effectiveness of utilizing ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-supported tool, to address challenges in implementing early childhood STEM education, as perceived by teachers. In this research, a qualitative case study approach was employed, involving 43 early childhood teachers specializing in STEM education, selected through purposeful sampling. The teachers participated voluntarily in a training program designed to incorporate ChatGPT into early childhood STEM education.
Data Collection and Analysis
Throughout the training, data were collected via observation reports and post-training semi-structured interviews. The researchers utilized MAXQDA software for content analysis, identifying themes, categories, and codes from the gathered data. The study findings reflected positive views from teachers regarding the potential benefits of integrating ChatGPT into early childhood STEM education.
Advantages and Concerns
According to the teachers, ChatGPT offers advantages such as guidance, optimized utilization of existing materials, customization of activities for students, and bridging gaps in teachers' knowledge. However, they also expressed concerns about potential negative outcomes, including technological dependency, decline in social skills, disruption of teacher-student relationships, and dissemination of misinformation.
In conclusion, while ChatGPT presents opportunities to enhance students' education, it is essential to address the identified challenges and effectively manage the integration of this technology in early childhood STEM education.
