Improving Health Literacy for Liver Diseases with ChatGPT

ChatGPT Provides Some Helpful Responses for Liver Diseases

A recent study published in Clinical and Molecular Hepatology showed that ChatGPT can offer easy-to-understand information about basic knowledge, lifestyle, and treatments for cirrhosis and liver cancer. Although ChatGPT has some limitations, it can help empower patients and improve health literacy for different populations.

What is Cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis refers to the scarring of the liver, which occurs when the liver is damaged due to various reasons such as alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

What is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is a dangerous cancer that affects the liver. It is more common in people with chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis.

What Did the Study Find?

The study found that ChatGPT responded accurately and comprehensively to 79.1 percent of questions about cirrhosis and 74 percent of questions about HCC. Responses about basic knowledge, lifestyle, and treatment showed better performance than the domains of diagnosis and preventive medicine. However, it failed to specify decision-making cut-offs and treatment durations and lacked knowledge of regional guideline variations, such as HCC screening criteria.

How Can ChatGPT Help Patients?

Patients with cirrhosis and/or liver cancer often have unmet needs and insufficient knowledge about managing and preventing complications of their disease. Although ChatGPT has limitations, it can help empower patients and improve health literacy for different populations.
