ChatGPT's "Dirty Secret": Grunt Workers Make AI Possible
Behind the creation of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT is an army of low-wage contract workers hired to train them. These workers, often uninsured, are responsible for the "grunt work" that goes into making AI language systems possible. Although their work may seem tedious, two OpenAI contractors recently shared with NBC News that it is essential to the AI's development.
The Importance of Grunt Workers
According to one of the contractors, Alexej Savreux, the work required to train an AI language system involves "labeling photos, writing predictions for the AI, and other things that help the LLM 'learn' how to generate responses better." While this work may be tedious and low-paying, it is essential to the AI's development. Without these so-called "grunt workers," there would be no ChatGPT.
Similarly, Jatin Kumar, a recent college graduate working as an OpenAI conversational trainer, credits his job as a way to learn about existing technologies and work towards building his own startup. Despite the tedious nature of the work, Kumar says he can't see himself stepping away from his role.
The Reality of AI Workforces
Although the AI industry generates a lot of hype, much of the work involved in developing AI is still reliant on a large human workforce. This workforce is often made up of low-wage, uninsured contract workers, who are an essential yet overlooked part of the AI industry.
While the work of these contract workers may not be glamorous, it is necessary to the development of AI language systems like ChatGPT. Their contributions help push the boundaries of AI technology, making it more accessible and useful to people around the world.
