ChatGPT May Provide Helpful Postoperative Instructions for Pediatric Otolaryngology Patients

Postoperative instructions for pediatric otolaryngologic procedures can be complicated, especially for families with low educational or health literacy levels. Fortunately, a recent study published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery suggests that ChatGPT may provide helpful postoperative instructions.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine compared ChatGPT-generated instructions to those generated by Google Search and a university. ChatGPT-generated instructions were scored from 73 to 82 percent for understandability, 20 to 80 percent for actionability, and 75 to 100 percent for procedure-specific items.

While institution-generated instructions had the highest understandability scores and actionability scores, the authors suggest that ChatGPT may be beneficial for patients and clinicians, especially when alternative resources are limited.

It's important to note that materials generated by ChatGPT and other similar sources may perform worse than institution-generated materials in key measures of understandability and actionability.
