Google's DeepMind division to Compete with ChatGPT

Since the success of ChatGPT and Bing Chat, Google has been struggling to come up with a competent answer. The company recently announced its latest competitor, Google Bard. However, as part of its efforts to streamline its AI strategy, Google has formed a restructured DeepMind division that will gather its AI experts in one central location to accelerate development.

The newly created division will go by the name "Google DeepMind," adding its own stamp to the name of the company Alphabet acquired in 2014. The team will be joined by the Brain team from Google Research, and it aims to “drive one of the greatest social, economic, and scientific transformations in history.” The goal of the new division is to accelerate and unify Google’s AI strategy, simplifying the decision-making process.

The DeepMind division will be led by Demis Hassabis, the CEO of DeepMind, while Jeff Dean, Google’s former lead of Google AI, will serve as Google’s Chief Scientist and report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. However, Google Research will still exist and work on “fundamental advances in computer science” across areas such as algorithms and theory, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate, sustainability, and responsible AI.

Despite Google's efforts to compete with ChatGPT, which took the internet by storm, some are worried about the approach the company is taking. According to a Bloomberg report, some employees have expressed concerns about Google Bard, calling it "a pathological liar." They argue that some of its instructions are wrong and could lead to death if followed, such as when asking for instructions on how to land a plane or how to scuba dive.

Many employees believe that the company should take a more cautious approach that does not put users at risk. It is hoped that the restructured DeepMind division will guide Google towards a more responsible path of AI development.
