Google Empowers Free Gemini Users with File Upload and Analysis Functionality

Google rolling out file upload, analysis for free Gemini tier

Google is expanding its features for free Gemini users by introducing the ability to upload and analyze files. This feature was previously available only for paid Advanced subscribers.

Once the update is rolled out, users will notice a new prompt saying, "Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights." By tapping on the 'plus' menu, users can now access the Files and Drive options in addition to the existing Camera and Gallery features. This update is applicable to both the Android app and the gemini.google.com website.

With this new capability, users can browse their Google Drive for files or upload directly from the web or mobile app. The uploaded documents can be used to ask questions, perform advanced searches, and receive summaries about the content. Additionally, spreadsheets can be shared for insights, and users can request Gemini to create charts based on the uploaded files.

Supported File Formats

The following file formats are currently supported for upload:

  • Document files
  • PDFs
  • Spreadsheets

Google is yet to update its support documents for this new feature, so details about the context window remain unclear. For users with Gemini Advanced subscriptions, the upload limit is set at 1 million tokens, which equates to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code.

On Android devices, document uploads will enable features such as "Ask about this PDF" in Files by Google and "Talk Like about this" (on Pixel and Galaxy S24/S25 devices).

Exploring Google Gemini from a Data Analyst's perspective - Solita

The rollout of file upload for free Gemini accounts has begun but is not widely available as of now. Please note that this feature is only compatible with Gemini 2.0 Flash and not the older 1.5 Flash model, which will be phased out soon.

Google initially introduced file upload for Gemini Advanced users in May 2024 with the release of version 1.5 Pro. Other exclusive features that still require an Advanced subscription include Deep Research, building custom Gems, Saved Info, and Recall.
