On day 10 of its Christmas holiday-themed press blitz, OpenAI announced a significant update, revealing that ChatGPT is now accessible over the telephone. This means users can now call ChatGPT directly at 1-800-CHATGPT for free and engage with it for up to 15 minutes per month (standard carrier fees may apply).
Introduction of ChatGPT Phone Service
The new feature was swiftly developed just a few weeks ago, as mentioned by OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil during a live stream. Currently, the phone service is exclusively available to users within the U.S. However, individuals residing in other regions can utilize WhatsApp to communicate with ChatGPT. The WhatsApp service is launching globally today and can be accessed at 1-800-242-8478.
Enhancing Accessibility to AI
According to OpenAI, the phone number was established using the Realtime API, while the WhatsApp integration utilizes the GPT-4o mini model in conjunction with the WhatsApp API. Weil highlighted that the purpose of the phone call feature is to introduce more people to AI technology. By offering a simplified version of ChatGPT through a familiar channel, users can easily experience and interact with AI.
Comparison with Google Search Tool
Notably, Google LLC had previously introduced a similar tool called GOOG-411 in 2007, providing users with the ability to call the Google Search engine for free directory assistance via voice. However, this service was eventually discontinued without an official announcement, following revelations of Google's data collection efforts for speech recognition technology.
Future Features and Limitations
The WhatsApp integration offers a more conventional chat experience, allowing users to engage with ChatGPT directly within the messaging app. This interaction is limited to basic conversational exchanges without the extensive customization features present in the official ChatGPT application.
