Google Gemini might land on iPhones this year | Cult of Mac

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, aims to collaborate with Apple to introduce Gemini on iPhones by the middle of this year. This revelation came during Pichai's testimony in an antitrust trial involving Google. Discussions about integrating Gemini on iPhones took place between Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook last year.

Apple had previously partnered with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence within iOS 18. Rumors surfaced before WWDC24 suggesting that Apple was in talks with Google for Gemini integration. However, Google's AI model is not yet native to iPhones through Apple Intelligence.

Current Status of Google Gemini Integration

Google and Apple are still in discussions regarding integrating Gemini on iPhones. Pichai expressed his hopes of offering Gemini as a built-in AI option on iPhones this year and finalizing a deal by mid-2025. If successful, Apple may showcase Gemini integration during the unveiling of iOS 19 at WWDC25, happening from June 9 to 13 this year.

Google CEO Hopes Gemini AI Will Soon Be Integrated Into Apple

Apple presently utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT for managing advanced Siri queries and Writing Tools. Should the Google agreement go forward, users may have the choice between ChatGPT and Gemini's AI models for these tasks.

Financial Aspects and Speculations

Despite the incorporation of ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, no monetary transactions occurred between the two companies. Apple does not pay OpenAI for the integration, and OpenAI provides no compensation to Apple for the exposure. A previous report mentioned that Apple views the exposure to ChatGPT as having equal or greater value than monetary payments.

Apple in Talks To Build Gemini Into iPhone

Regarding future deals, Apple might not reach a similar agreement with Google for Gemini integration in iOS 19. Google already pays Apple billions of dollars annually to maintain Google as Safari's default search engine on Apple devices.
