European regulators throw a wrench in Meta's AI bot plans

Meta says European regulators are ruining its AI bot

Meta has revealed that its plans for implementing an AI assistant in Europe have been put on hold due to objections from the Irish Data Protection Commission. The company was requested by the commission to delay the training of its large language models on publicly posted content from Facebook and Instagram profiles. Despite incorporating regulatory feedback and informing European Data Protection Authorities since March, Meta expressed disappointment at the request.

According to the Irish Independent, Meta had recently started notifying European users about data collection and provided an opt-out option to comply with privacy laws in Europe. The company has stated its commitment to working with the Data Protection Commission but emphasized that other tech giants like Google and OpenAI have already utilized European data for AI training. Meta argues that restricting access to user information will result in an inferior product and hinder the launch of Meta AI in Europe.

Positive Response from European Regulators

On the contrary, European regulators have welcomed Meta's decision to pause its AI training plans. Stephen Almond, the executive director of regulatory risk at the UK Information Commissioner's Office, commended Meta for addressing concerns raised by UK users and halting the use of Facebook and Instagram data for training generative AI.

The request from the Data Protection Commission followed a campaign led by the advocacy group NOYB (None of Your Business), which lodged 11 complaints against Meta across various European countries, as reported by Reuters. NOYB founder Max Schrems highlighted Meta's approach to data collection, emphasizing the importance of GDPR compliance in handling personal data.
