EU Establishes Task Force for ChatGPT Concerns
Following Italy's temporary ban on OpenAI's ChatGPT over privacy concerns, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has set up a task force to develop a privacy policy on artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT. Reuters report that a unified privacy policy could be put in place across all European Union countries in the future.
ChatGPT is a viral conversational AI tool that has become the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with more than 100 million monthly active users. However, there are concerns about how it processes user data, and Germany's data protection commissioner has also said that ChatGPT could face a ban in Germany. Spain has launched an investigation into possible data breaches by ChatGPT.
The EDPB oversees data protection rules in the European Union, and the task force aims to foster cooperation and exchange information on possible enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities. The AI was added to the body’s agenda after Spain requested a discussion on ChatGPT.
Just like all AI tools, ChatGPT depends on user interaction to become smarter. While this might be benefitting ChatGPT and OpenAI, it could pose a privacy concern for users.
