OpenAI's New Privacy Options for ChatGPT

OpenAI has recently announced new privacy options for ChatGPT conversations. These options are expected to be an added privacy safeguard for people who share sensitive information with the popular AI chatbot. With this move, people can now opt to withhold their conversations from being used in training the artificial intelligence company's models.

The process is simple. ChatGPT users can turn off their chat histories by clicking a toggle switch in their account settings. By doing so, their conversations will not be saved in ChatGPT's history sidebar, and OpenAI's models will no longer use that data to improve over time.

OpenAI aims to make people more comfortable using the chatbot for various applications, and this new feature will go a long way in achieving that. OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, has commented on the move, saying, "We want to move more in this direction where people who are using our products can decide how their data is being used — if it's being used for training or not."

Millions of people have tested ChatGPT and other bots since the launch of these AI chatbots. These systems are being utilized for various purposes, from helping plan vacations to acting as an impromptu therapist. However, their usage has also raised questions about how these systems can be used and how the companies process the prompts people type into them.

OpenAI has clarified that its software filters out personally identifiable information that comes in from users. The company will continue to train its models on user data by default. It will still store data, including that from conversations where users have turned off the chat history, for 30 days before deleting it to spot abusive behavior.

This month, OpenAI has also introduced a feature that allows users to email themselves a downloadable copy of the data they've produced while using ChatGPT. It includes conversations with the chatbot. The company is also planning to roll out a business subscription plan in the coming months that will not train on those users' data by default.
