Embracing Generational Diversity in the Workplace

GEN XYZ : Adapting and Evolving.. It was the best of times, it was ...

ListenShareIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…The opening sentence of Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities. That was then and things have pretty much remain unchanged. One persons foolishness is anothers breakthrough idea. The outliers of the past have become the livers of today.

Each generation is shaped by the unique socio-cultural and technological contexts in which they come of age. Their perceptions are colored by these and their perspectives develop accordingly. Understanding these generational differences has never been easy and it may not altogether be possible in toto— but one can be tolerant and accepting. To each their own — I always say.

Overcoming Generational Differences In The Workplace

Evolution of Workplaces

Working in the healthcare sector with a brick and mortar org for close to two decades now, I have seen the rapid changes that have happened in the last 7 years since GEN Z — the NKOTB joined us at work. They look like us and some even walk like us — but their direction is their own. Enough has been written about GenZ in the workplace. I would have little to add to that. However, to give them their due, these “digital Natives” have looked for stability and we have none to offer.

Most old companies are run by Gen X and we reward those who follow our rules. We are forced to accept terms such as diversity, work-life balance, mental health issues, and POSH. We fail to understand that these issues came about due to OUR excesses and mismanagement. Gen Z is the culmination of a lot of issues that went unchecked and now they won’t stand for it. We Gen X, are aghast.

The Multi-Generational Definition of Work-Life Balance

Inter-Generational Challenges and Opportunities

When different generations come together in the workplace, their varying approaches to work can lead to both challenges and opportunities. From varying Communication styles to an Attitude Toward Authority; from Work-Life Balance to Technology Adoption, we are all so different. Yet, if someone could pick and choose to make a formula for success, how would those traits be chosen and from who.

These are the top-of-the-mind traits (in my head) that could come together for a Vulcan mind meld kinda toolkit for success. Spock — you hear me!
