Elon Musk Wants to Create a Safer Version of AI
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has concerns about artificial intelligence and its potential risks to society. He wants to create a "safer" version of AI, specifically his own version of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot gaining widespread use and popularity. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, became the fastest-growing app ever, according to a USB study.
In an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson, Musk reiterated his concerns with AI and said just like the Food and Drug Administration regulates what we consume in the U.S., AI should have a regulator as well. Musk believes that AI companies should be regulated, which would increase the chances of AI being beneficial to humanity. He said if regulations are put into effect after "something terrible happens," it may be too late, and AI could potentially lose control at that point.
Musk acknowledged that he would be "starting late" in the AI game, but his plan would be to create "a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe." He plans to call this third option TruthGPT, and it would be different from Google's AI branch and Bard, a tool similar to ChatGPT.
Musk is worried that ChatGPT is being trained to be politically correct, which leads to untruthful outcomes. He believes this is the path to dystopia because training AI to be deceptive could lead to undesirable outcomes. Therefore, he wants to create an AI that is truthful and understands the universe, making it unlikely to try and harm humans.
While Musk's idea may seem fantastical, the billionaire has a history of executing on his ideas. In 2021, he used SpaceX resources to send civilians to space, launching successful flights. He also promised to use resources from his Boring Co. to create a mini submarine to rescue the Thai boys' soccer team stuck in a cave in 2018.
Musk's desire to create a "safer" version of AI is rooted in his concerns about the potential risks of unregulated AI. By creating an AI that understands the universe and is truthful, Musk believes that AI will be less likely to harm humanity.
