Elon Musk Takes On OpenAI with X.AI

Elon Musk Creates X.AI to Rival OpenAI

Elon Musk is known for his contributions to the tech industry, including his involvement in SpaceX and Tesla. Recently, he registered a new AI company under his conglomerate, X Holdings Corp, called X.AI. This subsidiary will be the home of efforts to build a tool similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Musk has been critical of AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT in the past due to its alleged left-wing bias. ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI, has been trained on a massive amount of text to generate human-like responses to questions. Despite its success, it has already been criticized for generating 'woke' responses such as refusing to praise Donald Trump, argue in favor of fossil fuels, or make jokes about women.

With X.AI, Musk aims to assemble a team of AI researchers and engineers to create a product with less left-wing bias than ChatGPT. Musk's belief in free speech will influence the development process of this new chatbot product.

X.AI appears to come under X Holdings, Musk's new conglomerate, which also oversees X Corp, the company that owns Twitter. Recently, Musk shut down the company that owned Twitter, incorporating it into a company of his own called X Corp, which is set to become the company for an upcoming platform that he's referred to as an 'everything app'.

According to the Financial Times, Musk has secured thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia Corp for the X.AI project. GPUs are systems that power the computing required for intensive tasks such as AI and high-end graphics.

It comes just weeks after Musk and 1,000 other technology leaders called for a pause on the 'dangerous race' to develop AI, which they fear poses a 'profound risk to society and humanity' and could have 'catastrophic' effects.

Despite his contributions to AI, Musk has been vocal about his concerns over the technology's dangers, calling it 'much more dangerous than nukes' and 'more risk than North Korea'.
