Elon Musk Working on “TruthGPT” to Counter ChatGPT AI

Elon Musk has announced that he is working on an alternative to ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by OpenAI. He has claimed that ChatGPT is being trained to be “politically correct”. Musk was an early investor in OpenAI but has frequently raised concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence since leaving the company. Recently, he was one of the signatories of a letter that called for an immediate halt to the development of “giant AI experiments”.

Musk’s alternative chatbot, which he’s calling “TruthGPT,” seeks to be a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe. Musk believes that an AI that wants to understand humanity is less likely to destroy it. During the interview with Fox News, Musk advocated for the regulation of AI, stating he is a “big fan”. However, he called AI “more dangerous” than cars or rockets and said it has the potential to destroy humanity.

Musk’s departure from OpenAI was related to his focus on engineering problems at Tesla and some differences of opinion with OpenAI's leaders. While being a part of the board at OpenAI, he co-chaired it and was an early investor in the company.

Musk has repeatedly highlighted examples of what he believes shows left-wing bias or censorship. He lamented that OpenAI is now closely aligned with Microsoft and is no longer a non-profit, which is why he came up with the name and concept of “TruthGPT”. Musk’s concerns about AI's dangers are not unfounded. Recently, US safety regulators announced an investigation into a fatal crash involving a Tesla suspected of using an automated driving system, Autopilot, when it ran into a parked fire truck in California.

All in all, Musk’s effort to counter ChatGPT with “TruthGPT” is his way of ensuring an AI that understands humanity and seeks maximum truth-seeking. As he says, “If you have an AI that’s smarter than the smartest human, then that AI will be better than humans at creating AI—so it’s an exponential thing. It’s very important that it be benign—that it have a good impact."
