OpenAI and Meta Platforms are reportedly in separate talks with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited to expand their artificial intelligence offerings in India, according to The Information.
Discussions include the possibility of Reliance Jio distributing ChatGPT and potentially hosting OpenAI’s models in a large-scale data center planned for Jamnagar, Gujarat.
The report further said that the Sam Altman-led company also considered lowering the subscription price of ChatGPT from $20 to $7 per month, though it remains unclear whether that idea has been discussed with Reliance.
Collaboration Details
Another scenario would see Reliance selling OpenAI’s models to enterprise customers through an application programming interface (API), ensuring local customer data stays within India.
Meanwhile, Meta Platforms is also exploring avenues to utilize Reliance’s upcoming data center, which the conglomerate has described as the largest in the world.
Implications and Opportunities
The potential collaboration between OpenAI, Meta, and Reliance could significantly advance AI accessibility and data sovereignty in India. By leveraging Jio's vast user base and the new Jamnagar data center, these partnerships could democratize AI services and ensure local data compliance.
How do you see local regulatory frameworks evolving to support these AI integrations and data localization efforts?
