New ChatGPT Plugin for RPG Maker MZ Lets You Auto-Generate Dialogue

The free game development team kotonoha* has recently launched the official version of the ChatGPT_APIMZ plugin for RPG Maker MZ. This plugin, when combined with OpenAI API, enables users to incorporate AI-generated dialogue into their RPG Maker MZ games.

RPG Maker MZ, which was released by KADOKAWA in August 2020, is a PC-based RPG creation tool. The latest versions of the RPG Maker series come with the ability to use plugins that users can either create themselves or use from others.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, is an AI chatbot that OpenAI has developed, which utilizes the company's vast language models. It can be used through a web browser, or users can integrate it into their programs using API. It has a wide range of applications, from answering questions to executing assignments.

The ChatGPT_APIMZ plugin is designed specifically for using ChatGPT in RPG Maker MZ, enabling users to generate character dialogue and reactions using AI. Ever since the launch of ChatGPT, gamers have been exploring various ways to incorporate this technology into games. ChatGPT_APIMZ is another groundbreaking effort to merge AI and gaming.

In the demo video of the plugin, the NPCs (non-playable characters) do not have predefined dialogue lines. They are only assigned a name, role, and other attributes, following which ChatGPT automatically generates their dialogue. For instance, the young girl standing near the village entrance has been assigned specific character traits like being a seven-year-old, her favorite food, and her way of speaking.

When the player interacts with the girl, ChatGPT receives instructions to tell them the name of the village. The AI then generates a dialogue line based on this information and the girl's assigned character traits. As the dialogue is automatically generated, the girl gives different responses each time you speak to her.

The plugin is available for download from kotonoha*’s official website, but users need to have an OpenAI API key to use it. Kindly note that if you release your game while your API key is still registered on it, there is a risk of it getting leaked to third parties who could exploit it. To avoid this issue, it is recommended that when releasing your game, either set the API key on the server-side or integrate a mechanism that asks the player to enter their key.

kotonoha* has developed over 13 games, including RPGs and mystery visual novels, all available for free. Their ChatGPT_APIMZ plugin has already started being used by other developers, and one of them has uploaded a video showcasing an in-development game that involves interactions with AI. Given the current trajectory, we can expect more games that use AI-generated dialogue in the future.
