Apple releases iOS 18.2 public beta with AI emoji app, ChatGPT-Siri integration, and more
Apple has rolled out the latest iOS and iPadOS 18.2 software updates to the public beta, introducing a range of new features designed to enhance user experience. Among the key additions are an AI emoji generator app, seamless integration of ChatGPT with Siri, and advanced visual search capabilities using the iPhone 16 cameras.
What's new in the update?
The newest features, collectively referred to as Apple Intelligence, were previously exclusive to developers but have now been made available to the public beta users. These include innovative tools such as Genmoji for custom emoji creation and the Image Playground feature for generating pictures.
One of the standout inclusions is the integration of ChatGPT with Siri, offering users the ability to access a wide range of functionalities without the need for an account. From writing text to answering queries and creating images, ChatGPT can assist users in various tasks through simple voice commands.
Additionally, users can now leverage Siri to retrieve information from within their apps or take actions based on on-screen content. The 'Image Playground' tool enables the creation of new images through interactive prompts, while Genmoji provides a similar system for crafting personalized emojis.
Visual Intelligence with iPhone 16 cameras
With the iOS 18.2 update, iPhone 16 users gain access to the new Camera Control feature, allowing them to launch Visual Intelligence for real-time object and location identification using the device's camera lens. This cutting-edge functionality enhances the overall user experience and opens up new possibilities for augmented reality applications.
Apple has also released public betas for iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2, and tvOS 18.2, expanding the scope of its latest software updates across multiple platforms.
Evolution of Apple Intelligence
Prior to the iOS 18.2 release, Apple introduced several AI features, including Writing Tools and notification summaries powered by Apple Intelligence in the preceding iOS 18.1 update. The company continues to enhance its AI capabilities, with plans to support additional languages, including English (India), in the near future.
Apple Intelligence serves as a personalized intelligence system that harnesses the capabilities of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and visuals, streamline app interactions, and leverage contextual information to simplify daily tasks while prioritizing user privacy.
Enhanced Writing Tools
Integrated across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Writing Tools empower users to enhance their writing skills by offering features such as rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text across various applications. With the Rewrite function, users can select different versions of their content and adjust the tone to suit the intended audience.
Proofread functionality checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, providing helpful suggestions and explanations for edits. Users can also utilize the summarization feature to condense selected text into easily digestible formats, including paragraphs, bullet points, tables, or lists.
