Meta to Use EU User Data for AI Training, Offers Opt-Out
Meta has announced plans to utilize data collected from European Union users to train its artificial intelligence systems, and has begun notifying users in the EU of this change via email and in-app messages. The notification not only outlines how the data will be used for AI training, but also provides an online form through which EU users can opt in or out of data sharing.
Data Usage Clarifications
Meta emphasized that the form is designed to be easily readable and navigable, and that it fully respects each user’s choice to participate or decline. According to Meta, only publicly shared posts and interaction data from Meta AI-powered services will be used for training. Private messages or non-public content will not be utilized, nor will any data from users under the age of 18.
Optimizing Services for European Region
Meta clarified that this initiative to use EU user data for AI training is aimed at optimizing services specifically within the European region and adapting its AI model architecture accordingly. Previously, Meta had stated that its AI systems and services would be customized for different regions to reflect local cultures, languages, and customs—enhancing the relevance and accuracy of features such as content moderation and automated service functions.
Transparency and Competition
The company also pointed out that other firms, including Google and OpenAI, are similarly collecting EU user data to refine their AI systems. However, Meta asserted that its approach will be more transparent than that of its competitors.
