ChatGPT: The Future of Work and Employment

How ChatGPT is Enabling Overemployment in the Pandemic Era

A recent report on Vice's Motherboard has revealed that employees are using the AI-powered ChatGPT tool to hold multiple jobs simultaneously, all while keeping their employers in the dark. This trend is a result of "overemployment," which has emerged during the pandemic as white-collar employees seek to augment their income due to enforced remote working conditions.

One anonymous employee, who chose to remain unnamed, revealed that they turned towards ChatGPT to complete their job tasks more efficiently and had landed a second job as a result of it. This employee, who goes by the name of Ben, works for financial-technology companies promoting new products in Toronto.

According to Ben, ChatGPT carries out roughly 80% of his job duties, which has allowed him to complete his work much faster. He also mentioned that the updated version of the AI tool, GPT-4, has made the jobs even easier. He shared how he was able to leverage ChatGPT to write cover letters for his second job. "I can just tell it to create a story, and it just does it for me, based on the context that I gave it," added Ben.

Ben also revealed he uses ChatGPT to craft messages to his manager, ensuring that the bot writes in a style and tone that appears more organic and natural, thereby avoiding any suspicion from his employer.

While the use of technology has been helping many employees manage their workload better, it is important to note that employees should not misuse technology at the workplace. The focus must always be on delivering quality work to the employer while meeting job requirements and responsibilities.
