UCLA introduces ChatGPT Enterprise as first university in California to implement advanced AI technology
UCLA is proud to announce its partnership with OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT Enterprise to its academic, administrative, and research communities. This groundbreaking initiative solidifies UCLA as the first university in California to integrate this cutting-edge AI technology into its operations.
The agreement, fully supported by the UC Office of the President, not only benefits UCLA but also extends to other UC campuses, granting access to a UC-specific version of OpenAI’s interactive and natural language-based tool.
Advancing Innovation at UCLA
Lucy Avetisyan, UCLA’s associate vice chancellor and chief information officer, expressed excitement about the new resource, stating, “We are thrilled to bring this resource to our university and eager to see how Bruins will leverage this tool to foster innovation and drive efficiencies in diverse applications in the coming months and years.” Avetisyan has been at the forefront of efforts to integrate AI technology at UCLA and has been instrumental in guiding the implementation of the campus’s Digital Campus Roadmap, which aims to enhance campus technology foundations and support UCLA’s strategic plan over the next five years.
Empowering the Campus Community
ChatGPT Enterprise will be accessible to students, faculty, and staff engaged in projects related to teaching, learning, and research innovation. An open call for project proposals will be issued later this year, with a focus on key areas such as enhancing student success, amplifying research endeavors, and improving institutional effectiveness. Submission details will be shared with the UCLA community in the fall.
Collaboration with OpenAI
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We look forward to working closely with UCLA to find the best ways for ChatGPT to support a rich learning experience and cutting-edge research.”
Chris Mattmann, UCLA’s chief data and artificial intelligence officer, highlighted the importance of evaluating AI technology for its potential benefits and challenges across various fields. He emphasized the versatility of AI in tasks such as scheduling appointments, creating customized learning experiences, and assisting in research and data analysis.
Embracing Innovation in Education
Many members of the UCLA community are already embracing AI technology in innovative ways. Mathematics professor Deanna Needell, who also serves as the executive director of the UCLA Institute for Digital Research and Education, has successfully utilized AI to enhance the teaching of numerical linear algebra by incorporating AI-generated code for algorithm analysis in her classes.
Needell emphasized the transformative power of AI, stating, “AI has drastically changed the world and will continue to do so. As educators, we need to make sure our students have the best chance of helping this change be a positive one.”
UCLA’s partnership with OpenAI represents a significant step forward in integrating AI technology into higher education, paving the way for enhanced learning experiences, research capabilities, and operational efficiency at the university.
